Badia Polesine

The village on the river

The village of Badia Polesine is located on the right bank of the Adige River. Its name comes from the Abbazzia S. Maria della Vangadizza (Abbey of Saint Mary of Vangadizza), an important Benedictine monastery founded before the year 1,000, which shares the same name.

The main religious building is the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista (Church of St. John the Baptist), the village's cathedral built during the 18th century.

Among the main buildings, you can find the Teatro Sociale Eugenio Balzan, (Eugenio Blazan Social Theatre), the Palazzo degli Estensi, (Estensis’ palace), the Mercato Coperto (Covered Market), Villa Turchetti (Turchetti mansion) in liberty style and the Torre Civica (Civic Tower). In the foyer of the Teatro Sociale Balzan is a prestigious picture gallery, with a collection of paintings once belonged to Eugenio Balzan and consisting of works by the main schools and artistic movements that existed between the 19th and 20th century.
