Torre Donà

Piazzale G. Matteotti

The origins of this monumental site date back to 920 when Pope Giovanni X conceded to the Bishop of Adria Paolo Cattaneo the authorisation to build a castle in order to protect himself from barbarian attacks.

The fortress was built on an artificial embankment, the ancient Adige River riverbed, which overlooked the port and had the role of the military control of the transiting goods.

Later widened and fortified with crenellated walls, it had eight towers, a central keep and was surrounded by a moat with two drawbridges. Today the remains of the ancient walls can be admired especially the two towers: Torre Grimani or Torre Mozza, and Torre Donà.

The latter, with its height of about 60 metres, is considered one of the most relevant Italian medieval towers.
